Driver in fatal 2024 Beltway crash sentenced to 3 years /montgomery-county/2026/01/driver-who-killed-rockville-man-in-beltway-crash-to-serve-3-years-in-prison/ Wed, 14 Jan 2026 23:37:25 +0000 /?p=28805493 A driver who caused a fatal crash on the Capital Beltway in June 2024 has been sentenced to three years in prison.

In November 2025, Maria Luisa Alvarez, 20, pleaded guilty to negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle in the crash that led to the death of 30-year-old Rockville, Maryland, resident Boris Josue Bonilla.

On Jan. 9, Alvarez was sentenced to 10 years in prison, suspending all but three years. She will also face five years of supervised probation upon release.

Alvarez, a Lanham resident, was taking the ramp from southbound Georgia Avenue to the Inner Loop of the Beltway on June 5, 2024, in a 2005 Honda Accord when she failed to navigate the curve of the ramp and drove onto the travel lanes of the inner loop.

‘NFL Today鈥檚’ James Brown voted into National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame /sports/2026/01/nfl-todays-james-brown-voted-into-national-sports-media-association-hall-of-fame/ Tue, 06 Jan 2026 20:07:27 +0000 /?p=28775048 Longtime NFL Today host James Brown has been voted into National Sports Media Association鈥檚 Hall of Fame, the organization announced this week.

The D.C. native is in his 20th year of hosting CBS鈥 “The NFL Today” pregame show after hosting “FOX NFL Sunday” for 12 years.

An ordained minister known by his peers and friends as being very humble and self-effacing, Brown quoted scripture to 91欧美激情: “Humility precedes honor and that is what guides me in everything that I do.”

Brown was a basketball legend as a youngster growing up in D.C. After starring at DeMatha Catholic High School and Harvard University, he was drafted in the fourth round by the NBA鈥檚 Atlanta Hawks in 1973, but was cut in training camp before he ever played a game. The disappointment shook him to his core.

鈥淚 did not realize my dream of playing professional basketball,” Brown said. 鈥淚 was crushed and I cried and hid in the house for two weeks. 鈥 I vowed that I would never, ever allow an opportunity that I wanted badly to pass me by because I was ill prepared.鈥

After a short stint in the business world with the Xerox and Kodak, Brown began his sportscasting career in 1974. He started locally with the Washington Bullets and WUSA9, and later embarked on a network career at CBS, FOX and back to CBS.

Brown has won three Emmy Awards and has hosted more Super Bowls (11) than any broadcaster in history 鈥 yet he says his work ethic has never waned.

“I still have a free agent鈥檚 mentality about it to go out and perform with excellence every time out and never take anything for granted, even at this age and stage,” Brown said.

National Sports Media Association Executive Director Dave Goren聽told 91欧美激情 over email, 鈥淛ames Brown is a pro鈥檚 pro. Great at what he does, well-respected throughout the industry and as nice as they come.鈥

Also getting inducted is former ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, and, posthumously, Sid Hartman of the Minnesota Star Tribune and former CBS broadcaster Greg Gumbel, whose kindness left a lasting impression on Brown.

“You don鈥檛 find that kind of unselfishness in this business where egos are pretty big,鈥 Brown said. “So to be included with him is very special.”

Brown and the other honorees will be officially inducted during the organization鈥檚 66th awards weekend and national convention June 28-29 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Experts predict top health trends for 2026, offer advice on best wellness resolutions /health-fitness/2026/01/experts-predict-top-health-trends-for-2026-offer-advice-on-best-wellness-resolutions/ Mon, 05 Jan 2026 20:24:58 +0000 /?p=28771103 It鈥檚 a new year, and for many people, that means renewed goals to personal health and fitness.

But in 2026, wellness choices are looking different. U.S. 91欧美激情 & World Report 58 medical doctors, dietitians, and health researchers on their predictions for the top health and nutrition trends of 2026.

The survey found that new technologies and health products on the market, as well as a resurgence in prioritizing whole foods, are changing how people are approaching their personal health.聽Here鈥檚 what health trends expert panelists are expecting to emerge in 2026.

Expanded use of GLP-1 drugs

According to the survey, 52% of panelists said the use of GLP-1 medications will increase in 2026, making it their leading trend for the year.

GLP-1 medications, such as injectables Ozempic and Wegovy, have been touted as a miracle drug for weight loss and management. The survey added that as costs have decreased and oral GLP-1s have entered the market, usage rates have gone up.

said they have taken a GLP-1 drug at some point for weight loss and to treat diabetes and other chronic conditions.

AI-integrated wearable technology

Artificial intelligence is being used nearly everywhere in daily life, especially when comes to health and wellness.

Smart watches, rings and other technology, such as glucose monitors, are increasingly using AI to gather data about health and provide focused recommendations. The survey found 38% of the panelists deemed AI-integrated wearable technology as a top trend for 2026.

Smart device, such as Apple watches or Oura rings, track biometric data, such as sleep and heart rate variability, and provide users with additional information to help guide health decisions.

鈥淲e’re seeing here with this trend is moving from that one-size-fits-all health approach to a hyper-personalized version,鈥 said Annika Urban, a health editor for U.S. 91欧美激情.

鈥淚t’s going to tell you that all of those things that you’ve been told over the years that are good for you, are truly good for you,鈥 Urban told 91欧美激情. “But it’s also going to take a look at how those things that we do 鈥 our exercise, our sleep 鈥 how does that impact our biometric data? And it’s going to tell you really personally.鈥

Food as medicine

Tied with AI-integrated wearable technology is the increased use of the 鈥渇ood as medicine鈥 approach. The philosophy is straightforward: human health is closely tied to the food you consume.

Experts noted that using food to treat chronic health conditions is not necessarily new. But there has been a rising popularity in clinics around the country incorporating the approach into treatment plans.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a growing shift toward viewing food as medicine, with fewer people relying solely on supplements and instead prioritizing whole nutrient dense foods,鈥 said expert panelist Samar Kullab, a Chicago-based registered dietitian.

In D.C., nonprofit D.C. Greens runs a program called , which allows health care providers to prescribe fresh fruits and vegetables to Medicaid enrollees with diet-related chronic conditions. In 2025, Montgomery County to six local organizations as part of their 鈥淔ood as Medicine鈥 program.

How to be successful in your health goals

With so many choices around wellness, it can be easy to make a long and often unattainable list of New Year’s health resolutions. But 65% of experts said their suggestion for successfully sticking to your goals is to start with small, incremental changes.

Experts also advised using a support system for accountability. To create effective resolutions, they advised setting goals that meet the SMART formula 鈥 specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and time-oriented.

While weight loss is a very common New Year’s resolution, the survey found that nearly half the panelist experts ranked losing weight as the least impactful and sustainable nutrition resolution.

Instead, over half the panel said that the most impactful and sustainable resolution was to add more beneficial foods, such as vegetables and whole grains, into your diet.

Kenyan McDuffie tells 91欧美激情 he’s ‘excited about what is to come’ after resigning from DC Council /dc/2025/12/kenyan-mcduffie-eyes-run-for-dc-mayor/ Wed, 17 Dec 2025 03:45:55 +0000 /?p=28708438 At-Large D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie said Tuesday he was stepping down from his D.C. Council post in January, a move that all but paves the way for a mayoral bid.

After serving on the D.C. Council for over a decade, McDuffie told 91欧美激情 that his resignation came from his belief in 鈥渕oving on to other ways of serving the more than 700,000 residents across all eight wards of the District of Columbia.鈥

McDuffie said that it was bittersweet to attend his final legislative meeting, while alluding that he isn鈥檛 finished with his career in politics.

Since D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser聽announced that she would not be seeking reelection,聽McDuffie鈥檚 name has repeatedly come up as a potential candidate. Ward 4 Council member Janeese Lewis George has already聽launched her mayoral campaign.

“I think that’s fair, and I think residents have already heard me say as much,” he said, regarding a potential mayoral run. 鈥淚’m excited about what is to come in the new year.鈥

In order to run in the Democratic primary for mayor, McDuffie can鈥檛 retain his at-large seat.

Due to a stipulation in the Home Rule Act, only two of the D.C. Council鈥檚 four at-large seats can be held by the same political party. McDuffie switched to an independent to run for an at-large seat in 2022, after being a registered Democrat for much of his political career.

91欧美激情’s Nick Iannelli spoke with McDuffie about his plans for the future, what issues D.C. residents are facing and how he thinks the next mayor of D.C. will have to navigate President Donald Trump’s administration’s challenges to Home Rule.

‘The next mayor is going to have to fight tooth and nail’

While McDuffie wasn鈥檛 ready to discuss his decision, he told 91欧美激情 he plans to talk about it in the near future.

“I think it’s going to be important for me, when I am ready to discuss that decision and what my plans are, that I have a conversation directly and personally with residents across the District of Columbia,” he said.

He added that residents have been encouraging him to run and have shared with him the challenges they鈥檙e facing.

鈥淩esidents are still feeling the pressure of rising costs. They’re talking about this federal administration and Congress, together, posing the greatest threat to our city’s autonomy since the establishment of Home Rule,鈥 he said.

The next mayor of D.C. will need to navigate a challenging political terrain for the city. Since the start of President Trump鈥檚 second term, the federal government has repeatedly tested D.C.’s autonomy and self-governance.

鈥淭he next mayor is going to have to fight tooth and nail to protect the city’s autonomy and to protect our citizens鈥 basic human rights and civil rights,鈥 McDuffie said.

鈥淲e cannot have federal officers and law enforcement from other states, National Guard or otherwise, tearing families apart on the streets of the nation’s capital.鈥

鈥淲e’re going to fight to make sure that we are partners when we need to be with the federal government,鈥 he added.

Some council members and D.C. residents have criticized Bowser for her efforts to placate the Trump administration, particularly as it relates to the law enforcement surge in the city.

91欧美激情 asked McDuffie if he believes Bowser has fallen short in pushing back against Trump.

鈥淚 believe that she loves her hometown. I know that to be the case,鈥 McDuffie answered.

McDuffie then pivoted to his own vision for the nation’s capital: 鈥淲hen I think about what the future holds for our city and my role in it, I know that I want to continue to fight to protect our residents and really create pathways for residents to have a fair shot at economic prosperity.鈥

Man found guilty a 2nd time in retrial for ‘execution style’ double murder in Montgomery Co. /montgomery-county/2025/12/man-found-guilty-a-2nd-time-in-retrial-for-execution-style-double-murder-in-montgomery-co/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 02:17:21 +0000 /?p=28703839 A West Virginia man was again found guilty in the 2018 killing of two people who were found shot in the head inside a running vehicle in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Gregory Jones, 32, was convicted Friday by a jury in the deaths of Ashley Dickinson and Joshua Frazier, who were found shot “execution style” on Feb. 15, 2018, in Burtonsville.

Jones was first found guilty and sentenced to two life terms in prison without parole in 2021. That conviction was overturned on appeal due to the testimony of the state’s firearms expert and on the use of firearms identification testimony.

Jones again faces two potential life sentences in prison without parole plus an additional 40 years, the Montgomery County State鈥檚 Attorney鈥檚 Office said in a news release.

How investigators zeroed in on a suspect

Dickinson and Frazier were found dead inside a running vehicle, where investigators found 9 mm shell casings inside.

Charging documents said Frazier was planning to meet someone in the Silver Spring area to collect $900 that was owed to him. Records from Frazier’s phone indicated he was in contact with someone with a D.C. area code that he was supposed to meet.

Two days after Dickinson and Frazier were found dead, Gregory Jones’ cousin Tyshon Jones was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies in a West Virginia nightclub. Charging documents said that Tyshon and another person fired their weapons after a fight in the club and that video evidence shows Gregory was in the nightclub.

Investigators recovered 9 mm bullets from the club shooting that police used to link Gregory to the shooting in Burtonsville. Investigators also found that Tyshon had texted and called the same number that Frazier did about the debt owed to him.

Montgomery County police arrested Gregory in the killing of Frazier and Dickinson the following month.
