‘Mason was a firecracker’: Vigil held for Maryland teen swept away by floodwaters /local/2025/08/vigil-to-be-held-for-maryland-teen-swept-away-by-floodwaters/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 14:04:23 +0000 /?p=27865716 People in Mount Airy, Maryland, gathered together Sunday night to remember a 13-year-old boy swept away by floodwaters last week.

A candlelight vigil was held in memory of Mason Kearns at Watkins Park, according to .

A single rose sat above a drainage pipe in his honor while photos of Mason were on display. Neighbors and residents of the town spoke about Kearns.

“I have felt him with me every day, and I don’t know what my life is going to be like now without having him around,” Bonnie Errico, Kearns’ grandmother told TV station WJZ.

Investigators believe he was playing around a drainage pipe Thursday evening when floodwaters from torrential rain surged through the area and forced him into the pipe.

First responders and neighbors tried to save Kearns, but he had already drowned, according to investigators.

Early voting underway in Virginia to fill the late Rep. Gerry Connolly’s seat /virginia/2025/07/early-voting-underway-in-virginia-to-fill-the-late-rep-gerry-connollys-seat/ Fri, 25 Jul 2025 15:32:22 +0000 /?p=27799462 91欧美激情 will be livestreaming the Congressional District 11 Candidate Forum, hosted by the Reston Citizens Assocation, on Monday, July 28, at 6 p.m. Watch it here on 91欧美激情.

Early voting kicked off for a special election in Virginia鈥檚 11th Congressional District Friday, as contenders look to fill the seat left vacant by the late Rep. Gerry Connolly.

Connolly died in May following a battle with esophageal cancer. He served Virginia鈥檚 11th District, which includes Fairfax City and most of Fairfax County.

Voters will be able to cast their ballots in-person from July 25 through Sept. 6. Early voting sites include the Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax and the North County Governmental Center in Reston.

Democrat James Walkinshaw, Connolly’s former chief of staff who’s pledged to advance “Gerry’s legacy forward,” is facing Republican challenger Stewart Whitson in the race. The last time Republicans held the posting was in 2006.

From the economy to health care and abortion, Walkinshaw and Whitson previously broke down their standings on various key voter issues.

Regarding the economy, Whitson told 91欧美激情 that he believes there is a spending problem, whereas Walkinshaw said he felt as though the Trump administration is holding the U.S. back.

Walkinshaw, speaking to recent tax and spending bill cuts, also said that more than 320,000 Virginians are at risk of losing their health care. 鈥淚n Congress, I鈥檒l fight back and work to repeal their Big BS Bill 鈥 because no Virginian should lose coverage or pay higher premiums to fund this reckless agenda,鈥 he said.

For Whitson, the legislation 鈥渄idn鈥檛 cut Medicaid spending a dime.鈥 He said, 鈥1.4 million illegal immigrants are getting kicked off Medicaid,鈥 in addition to people who are signed up for the program in multiple states.

Both candidates will be participating in a candidate forum Monday, July 28, at the Reston Community Center. The event, hosted by The Reston Citizens Association will include a 60-minute Q&A segment.

Election Day is Tuesday, Sept. 9. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

‘Wall of wind and rain’: Thunderstorms in DC area bring in 60-plus mph winds, downed trees /weather-news/2025/06/humidity-will-bring-severe-storms-to-the-dc-area-thursday/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 15:42:03 +0000 /?p=27580078 .

This video is no longer available.

Tens of thousands of D.C.-area residents spent their Thursday evening without power after quick-moving storms poured down on the region, bringing powerful winds that toppled trees and caused damage to several homes.

91欧美激情’s Mike Murillo, who reported from the Capital Beltway on Thursday, said there were crews out on the roads to clear debris where trees had fallen. He said a homeowner in Bethesda was planning to take a nap in the master bedroom before storms rushed in, leading him to shelter in the basement. Then a tree collapsed the roof in.

“Just potentially saved his life here today,” Murillo said.

91欧美激情’s Jimmy Alexander saw a truck engulfed in flames after trees fell on it in the Mohican Hills neighborhood in Bethesda, Maryland.

Chris White told Alexander that he watched a tree fall onto power lines, which then fell on a landscaper’s truck.

“If you’ve got a lot of trees, you may end up having these problems with these really high, extreme weather events that we’re starting to have more and more,” White said.

Power outages

At some point more than 100,000 customers throughout the D.C. region were without power Thursday, including in Fairfax County where more than 75,000 were in the dark

Montgomery County Fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer told 91欧美激情’s Nick Iannelli Thursday that he’s heard dozens of reports for trees down on houses, but is not aware of any serious injuries.

“The activity was fierce and furious there for a while,” Piringer said. “The wind was really whipping around. Large trees are just twisting and turning.”

Before power was restored, Aisha Khan with Dominion Energy told Iannelli, “I do ask our customers, stay away from downed power lines so that our crews can do the work and get your power back online.”

Traffic impact

The storms affected the Thursday evening commute, leaving those who braved the roads on Juneteenth going in circles. 91欧美激情 Traffic Reporter Dave Dildine said he saw reports of crashes, dark traffic signals and heavy volume on area roads.

This video is no longer available.

“Wet and wild; it is terrible driving weather moving into the close and western suburbs,” Dildine reported around 4:10 p.m. in reference to Prince William County roads.

Several trees were blown onto the right lanes of the Outer Loop of the Beltway between River Road and the American Legion Bridge.

In Falls Church, Virginia, a tree crashed into several cars on the Dulles Connector Road between Route 123 and Interstate 66.

Trees fell on Georgetown Pike and Walker Road in Great Falls, stalling firefighters who were trying to reach other emergencies.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge was closed for about 15 minutes during the peak of the howling winds.

“If you’re one of the last drivers on the bridge spans, you’re going to be OK, but you’re going to feel the wind rocking you around a little bit. Hold on tight,” Dildine added.

During the evening commute, much of the D.C. area was under a severe thunderstorm warning by the National Weather Service. The D.C. region saw a half inch of rain, as the storms moved too quickly to produce flooding, 91欧美激情 meteorologist Mike Stinneford said.

“The saturated ground made it easier for the high winds to topple trees,” Stinneford said.

At Reagan National Airport, wind gusts reached 61 mph at one point, Stinneford said.

Stinneford said the storm cells produced 70 mph winds that easily pulled down trees and power lines.

Judge Cheryl McCally sentenced 22-year-old Kyler Mcroy to life in prison, suspending all but 30 years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release, according to a news release from the Montgomery County State鈥檚 Attorney鈥檚 Office.

On Feb. 10, 2022, Jones was found near Cinnamon Drive and Poppy Seed Lane in Gaithersburg, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Jones was targeted in a drive-by shooting.

Mcroy was later identified as one of the people in the suspect vehicle, according to the attorney’s office.

When Mcroy was arrested, Montgomery County police discovered a ghost gun with a 25-round capacity magazine located in the bedroom of his family home.

Mcroy pleaded guilty June 11, 2024, to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and to first-degree assault.

On the same day in court last June, Mcroy pleaded guilty to a charge of use of a firearm in commission of a felony in a separate shooting. That shooting happened a month after the homicide, on March 27, 2022, in the 9000 block of Forest View Place in Gaithersburg.

Judge McCally also recommended that while in prison, Mcroy be admitted to the program. According to the Maryland Department of Corrections, the program is to “ensure public safety through the psychotherapeutic treatment of individuals who demonstrated persistent antisocial and criminal behavior.”
