Fairfax County officials are asking the public for information about a fire that destroyed part of a Virginia Task Force 1 training facility in Lorton.
The fire was reported around 5 p.m. Saturday at Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s Urban Search and Rescue Training Facility on Furnace Road.
When crews arrived, they found a storage building fully engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported, but several pieces of equipment were destroyed, including a semitractor-trailer and a Kubota tractor. The equipment was used to move materials during training exercises.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“I’m hoping that we can figure out what happened here and be able to replace what we have, because this is what’s the bread and butter of Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue,” Battalion Chief Robert Schoenberger said during a Monday news conference.
Surveillance video captured six people walking around the property before the fire started. Officials said it is unclear how they entered the facility.
The training facility sits on a 48-acre site and is used by Virginia Task Force 1, a special operations unit that assists with disaster search-and-rescue missions. The team is currently in Venezuela helping with recovery efforts following the June 24 earthquakes.
Fire and police officials said it is too early to determine whether the fire was intentionally set, and investigators want to speak with the people seen in the surveillance footage before determining whether a motive exists.
Investigators are exploring all possible causes of the fire, and additional police patrols will be deployed around the facility.
“This is a heavy heartbreak for me. These tools are what’s used on a daily basis for our special ops here in Fairfax County,” Schoenberger said. “All of the loss that’s behind is going to take a significant amount of time to repair and get back on the road to get our guys and gals on the streets to serve others.”
