WASHINGTON — It took 85 firefighters to extinguish a blaze聽that broke out Sunday afternoon at Leisure World, a major retirement community near Rockville, Maryland.
The fire was reported at 15101 Glade Drive, where several apartment buildings were damaged, according to Montgomery Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer.
Several people had to聽evacuate the building; one person was treated for burns and smoke inhilation, Piringer said.
According to officials, the cause of the fire was a聽cigarette making聽contact with oxygen.
The estimated cost of damage is around $500,000.
