WASHINGTON 鈥 An Amtrak train hit and killed聽a聽man in Gaithersburg, and the investigation caused delays on the tracks in Montgomery County聽Tuesday afternoon.
A man was聽trespassing on the tracks near S. Summit Avenue and聽E. Diamond Avenue聽in聽Gaithersburg, Maryland, around 2 p.m. when Train #30 hit him, said Amtrak spokesperson Beth Toll.
The train, coming from Chicago, had scheduled an emergency stop聽at Rockville’s station before its final destination in D.C. for a medical situation on board. On its way to the emergency stop, the train hit the pedestrian near the Gaithersburg station, said Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service聽spokesman Pete Piringer.
The man hit by the train died on the scene.聽The patient on board the train was transported to聽a hospital聽with non-life-threatening injuries, Piringer said.
There were no other injuries to the train’s 76 passengers or crew members on board, Toll said.
It is not yet clear why the man was in the area near the tracks, police said. His聽identity will be released once his family has been notified, police added.
The train was delayed following the incident, but Amtrak did not anticipate it would cause any other delays to its afternoon or evening service, Toll said.
On MARC’s Brunswick Line, all聽trains experienced 20- to 30-minute delays between Rockville and Germantown. Normal service resumed around 5:30 p.m.
