Gazelle calf makes first public appearance at National Zoo

WASHINGTON – The Smithsonian National Zoo’s 14-day-old gazelle calf made her first public appearance Wednesday.

The calf was born Oct. 13 to 3-year-old Zafirah, the mother, and 8-year-old Raul, the father. In September, a male dama gazelle calf was born.

The zoo now has seven dama gazelles. The species is considered critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Fewer than 500 dama gazelles exist in the wild.
