Petroleum leaks might have caused D.C. water problems

WASHINGTON — A do-not-drink order affected residents in the Shaw and Logan Circle neighborhoods for three days last week, and while the water is back on, people still want answers.

A petroleum smell in the water in those areas led DC Water to issue the order last Wednesday; it wasn鈥檛 lifted until Friday.

ABC7 reports that the order hit some residents hard: A restaurateur had to wash his dishes with bottled water. A coffee shop鈥檚 business was hurt badly. Some said the smell was strong enough that they had to stay in hotels.

ABC7 found that there are 105 sites in the District where underground petroleum tanks are leaking — 209 tanks in all. Six of those sites are in or near Shaw.

DC Water officials haven鈥檛 commented on the origins of the petroleum problem yet.
