House committee meeting devolves into chaos as Greene and Ocasio-Cortez trade barbs

(CNN) 鈥� Proceedings quickly devolved Thursday night during a House Oversight Committee markup on holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt, with GOP Rep. and Democratic Rep. getting briefly locked in a heated back and forth.

As the panel met to consider theover his refusal to turn over audio recordings of President Joe Biden鈥檚 interview with聽special counsel Robert Hur, Greene sparked outrage when she commented on Democratic Rep. 鈥檚 appearance.

The Georgia Republican started by asking Democrats on the committee if any of them employ the , who is overseeing the criminal trial in New York of former President Donald Trump. As Republicans have sought to, they have gone after Merchan鈥檚 daughter, who has ties to Democrats, as they seek to undermine the case.

Crockett, a freshman lawmaker from Texas, asked Greene, 鈥淒o you know what we鈥檙e here for?鈥�

Greene shot back: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think you know what you鈥檙e here for 鈥� I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you鈥檙e reading.鈥�

Ocasio-Cortez immediately jumped in to get Greene鈥檚 words taken down.

鈥淭hat is absolutely unacceptable. How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person,鈥� the New York Democrat said.

Greene said to Ocasio-Cortez: 鈥淎re your feelings hurt?鈥�

Ocasio-Cortez responded, 鈥淥h, girl. Baby girl. Don鈥檛 even play.鈥�

鈥淏aby girl? I don鈥檛 think so,鈥� Greene retorted.

With her microphone still on, Ocasio-Cortez told her Democratic colleagues during a break that Greene鈥檚聽鈥渆go is bruised,鈥� adding, 鈥渟he doesn鈥檛 want to say sorry to nobody for nothing. She is going to learn.鈥�

When House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer finally asked Greene if she would strike her words, Greene agreed that she would take her words down but would not apologize.

Greene said, 鈥淚鈥檓 not apologizing.鈥�

When Greene refused to apologize, Ocasio-Cortez made another motion to strike the Georgia Republican鈥檚 words.

Greene shot back, 鈥淲hy don鈥檛 you debate me?鈥�

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 pretty self-evident,鈥� Ocasio-Cortez said.

Greene then said: 鈥淵eah, you don鈥檛 have enough intelligence.鈥�

Greene continued to maintain that she would strike her words so the proceedings could continue 鈥渂ut I鈥檓 not apologizing.鈥�

The majority of Republicans eventually voted to allow Greene to continue speaking, though GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado joined Democrats in voting to have Greene silenced for the remainder of the markup.聽The panel ultimately voted to advance contempt proceedings against the attorney general.

Crockett, however, did not take Greene鈥檚 remarks lying down. After a series of confusing votes in response to Greene鈥檚 explosive rhetoric,聽Crockett made a dig that appeared to be directed at the Republican.

鈥淚鈥檓 just curious. Just to better understand your ruling. If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody鈥檚 bleach blonde bad built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?鈥澛燙rockett聽said.

Comer responded, 鈥淯h, what now?鈥�
