WASHINGTON —聽Prince George鈥檚 County Firefighters and Medics 聽say a 68-year-old man died in a house fire in Maryland聽Friday.
Firefighters found Bernie Hayes suffering third-degree burns over the majority of his body聽at聽his聽Oxon Hill, Maryland home Friday afternoon.
They had responded to a call reporting smoke at the brick duplex in the 5200 block of Leverett Street. They 聽entered the home and extinguished a fire in the first floor living room. They聽found Hayes unresponsive聽in the immediate area of the fire.
He was taken聽to Medstar Washington Hospital Center’s burn unit聽in critical condition, but died from his injuries late Friday evening.
Fire Investigators searched for聽the cause of the fire, but it seems to be accidental, causing $20,000 worth of damage. The home had聽working smoke alarms.
Firefighters returned to Leverett Street on Saturday morning to ask residents door-to-door about the status聽of their smoke alarms. They’ll help test alarms and replace faulty alarms for free.
