WASHINGTON 鈥� A charity that sponsors a country retreat for wounded warriors and their families is聽doubling its capacity聽by building a house with a donation from a local credit union’s foundation.
The Warrior Retreat at Bull Run in Haymarket, Virginia,聽is operated聽by the nonprofit聽. They received $300,000 from the PenFed Foundation of Alexandria, Virginia,聽for聽a聽new, second聽house.
“It just absolutely blew my mind,” said SOWW co-founder and president Shirley Dominick. “We can double the amount of warriors and families that we will care for through the next year. And, we’re just so grateful for that.”
Going from a聽hospital to the hills, from a clinical environment to a home accompanied by聽family, can聽inspire聽hope among wounded warriors, whose聽extended聽recovery time can rob them of a sense of normalcy.
“We ultimately save lives,” Dominick said. “We see it over and over from their testimonies.”
Groundbreaking and a ceremonial check transfer was held Monday聽on the retreat’s聽37-acre campus on the edge of the Bull Run Mountain Conservancy.
“It feels really great when you help inspire and lift up our service members,” said PenFed President and CEO聽James Schenck. “They’ve done so much as volunteers; they’ve gone into harm’s way. Whether it鈥檚 a visible or invisible injury, when they have challenges Americans need to stand behind their warriors.”
Schenck said the retreat is a community affair. Boy Scouts mow the lawns and聽write letters of thanks to the service聽members;聽chefs from area restaurants volunteer to cook for the families.
“So, the service members, when they’re staying there with their loved ones, when they’re recovering 鈥� everything is taken care of for them,” Schenck said. “It really is a unique experience.”
The retreat has a long waiting list. The new聽house will be completed by July 2018. The five-bedroom house will then support a family, caregivers and friends for a week, every week, after that.
“We’re very proud to play a small part in spreading the word, and in this case providing聽funding to make this second home available,” Schenck said on behalf of the PenFed Foundation.
PenFed Credit Union started 82 years ago serving聽the national defense community, but now military service is not required to join.
