WASHINGTON — The big construction project on U.S. Route 1聽in Fort Belvoir is reaching a聽relevant milestone next week. The new bridge over Virginia’s Accotink Creek is ready to start carrying traffic near Fort Belvoir’s Tully gate.

Crews working through the weekend are getting the last stretch of pavement to the bridge laid down just south of the Fairfax County Parkway.

The plan, weather permitting, is to shift Richmond Highway’s southbound lanes onto the new roadway and bridge by midday Tuesday, June 30 and then shift the northbound lanes over onto the new lanes midday Wednesday, July 1.

However, extensive weekend rain could alter that schedule, according to聽Tim Brown, a Senior Project Engineer at聽the Federal Highway Administration, who is overseeing the project.

The Accotink Creek Bridge and travel lane shift聽is just one part of a bigger plan now in progress to widen Richmond Highway between the south end of Fort Belvoir and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway which entails adding an additional lane in each direction.
