WASHINGTON — New alternative transportation projects in Virginia will allow more residents to bike to Metro stations, walk to work and have safer routes to school.
The newly funded projects are slated to improve alternative transportation options in the state.
鈥淲e received about $7.6 million in funding requests projects for 15 projects across northern Virginia,鈥� planner Lamont Cobb told the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board.
Its grant only allowed $2.9 million in spending, so he said are those ranked highest by the members participating in the project selection for their impact on the community.
鈥淚n Fairfax County, the Cinderbed Road Bikeway Project, which was a proposed bike trail, will connect the Franconia-Springfield Metro to employment centers in Fort Belvoir,鈥� Cobb told members of the region transportation board.
Other projects include funding for Reston Bikeshare to install new stations around Wiehle Reston East and Reston Town Center Metro stations; safe routes to Arlington鈥檚 McKinley Elementary; pedestrian improvements in Loudoun鈥檚 Town of Round Hill and multiple sidewalk projects in Prince William County.
