Julio Quintanilla, 61, of Alexandria, was struck by a 2025 Toyota Corolla on July 3 shortly after 8 p.m. when crossing Richmond Highway. The driver of the car stayed on the scene and was not injured in the crash.

At the time, police said Quintanilla was not in a crosswalk when he tried to cross the roadway, an act that prompted authorities to later issue a citation against him.

Quintanilla’s injuries were initially believed to be non-life-threatening. However, the听Medical Examiner’s Office told detectives Saturday that Quintanilla died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to a news release.

“Preliminarily, alcohol appears to be a factor for the pedestrian,” police said in the release.

The Baltimore County Police Department was alerted to the discovery of human remains shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Friday, near the interchange of Route 702 and Interstate 695.

At the scene, investigators found the remains in a creek bed along the Back River tributary.

Based on preliminary findings, police said in a release that the discovery could be tied to the case of a missing woman named Kimberly Gordon, 46, who was last seen on June 21 at about 2 p.m.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy of the remains to officially determine the identity and cause of death, police said.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have information pertinent to the case to contact the Baltimore County Police Department at 410-887-4636.

Severe thunderstorms in the DC region Saturday afternoon and evening left a wave of destruction from Maryland to the District to Virginia.

An entire roof was blown off a barn in Catlett, Virginia, and a home was severely damaged in Knoxville, Maryland, posts on social media show.

More than 27,000 people were without power just before 7 p.m. 鈥� over 20,000 were in Anne Arundel County, according to the .

By 7 p.m. flood, thunderstorm and tornado watches were called off in the area and cloudy, humid air remained. Mike Stinneford, 91欧美激情 meteorologist said to expect a chance of a shower or thunderstorm before midnight. Then skies will clear and become less humid overnight with lows in the 60s to lower 70s.

The District was under an extreme heat alert Saturday as severe storms moved through the region during the afternoon and evening hours. Those storms produced a slew of alerts.

“A line of strong to severe thunderstorms will move from west to east across our area over the next several hours,” said Stinneford.

“Storms may produce wind gusts over 70 mph, large hail and heavy rainfall.”

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a heat alert as daytime temperatures felt like 105 degrees or hotter.

The alert remains through Sunday at 8 a.m. and says, “extremely hot temperatures and humidity during the day and overnight will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. People who work or participate in outdoor activities may be at greater risk.”

Earlier, D.C. issued an air quality alert for the entire region, saying it was unhealthy for sensitive groups.

“Poor air quality continues as wildfire smoke lingers in the area,” AccuWeather Meteorologist La Troy Thornton.

Sunday will be cloudy with “some hazy sun as the wildfire smoke lingers,” Thornton said.

On Monday, there will be possible thunderstorms in the afternoon with an otherwise sunny day.

Tuesday is expected to be cloudy with a thunderstorm possible in the afternoon.

For two years, from 2023 to 2025, Stephen Chadwick Howell, 25, had sexually explicit conversations with at least three victims who were minors, .

He was sentenced for coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity, and destruction or removal of property to prevent search or seizure.

Howell misrepresented his age and sent explicit images of himself, according to the release. He also met with at least one minor victim who he “engaged in sex and produced sexually explicit images and videos of the victim, which he later distributed to her,” the DOJ said.

In addition, the DOJ said Howell sent money to a 16-year-old victim who sent sexually explicit images of herself that were later found on Howell鈥檚 cellphone.

Howell also talked with a person living in New York from January of 2023 to January of 2024 about the sexually explicit images of minors and distributed the images to that person as well as instructions on “grooming minors” and how to trick victims online, the release said.

Howell also asked that person for help with rebuilding his collection of sexually explicit material involving minors after he said he deleted it.

The search of Howell’s home for materials happened on May 7, 2025, when the FBI executed a warrant and Howell did not exit the residence when asked and instead took two knives from the kitchen and barricaded himself in his bedroom for nine hours.

During that standoff, the DOJ release said that Howell “urinated on his laptop in an attempt to prevent the FBI from accessing its contents.”

Investigators were able to repair the laptop after the incident and recover the images, according to the release.

The lawsuit alleges that these practices discriminate against U.S. citizens who miss out on opportunities to earn scholarships and other incentives that are awarded to illegal citizens.

“Congress long ago made clear that Maryland cannot deny educational opportunities to American citizens that it gives to illegal aliens in the State,” Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward said.

The U.S. seeks in the lawsuit to prohibit enforcement of the statute allowing the financial assistance and in-state tuition rates for all illegal aliens who maintain in-state residency.

“By granting illegal aliens in-state tuition, Maryland is not only violating federal law but subsidizing education for illegal aliens, costing Maryland taxpayers roughly $9 million for just one academic year. This Department of Justice is committed to fulfilling President Donald Trump鈥檚 promise that illegal aliens will not obtain taxpayer benefits or preferential treatment over our own citizens,” Woodward said.

The DOJ said this filing marks the agency鈥檚 13th lawsuit challenging in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

“D.C. is implementing several strategies to reduce traffic fatalities, including data-driven approaches to identify and address places where fatalities are more likely, and safety measures like eliminating dual turn conflicts and targeted prohibitions on right turns on red,” she said.

New York City ranked first overall, followed by Boston and San Francisco.

“The way that your city is running is working and it’s doing what it can do to take care of its people, and that’s really wonderful,” Brennan said.

Those three cities are also known for traffic congestion, which Brennan said may play a role in reducing fatal crashes.

“Common sense will tell you that the more people are on the road, the slower you have to travel, the less likely you are to be in a fatal accident. Perhaps more likely to be in a fender bender, but you’re less likely to die in a car accident due to congestion. Washington D.C. is one of those areas,” Brennan said.听

D.C. recorded 46 traffic deaths in 2024, a fatality rate of 0.66 per 10,000 people. New York’s fatality rate was 0.26 per 10,000 residents, while Boston’s was 0.37.

“While that’s 46 fatalities too many, and we should work to prevent them all, it’s good to know that it’s such a small percentage of the total population,” she said.

The findings were at odds with Allstate’s recent 2026 Best Drivers Report, which ranked D.C. second to last.

it happened at 12:45 a.m. when a black Tesla Model 3 was making a left turn from Route 301 onto Governors Park Lane.

Police said that the Tesla “failed to yield” to the right of way of a Harley-Davidson traveling southbound on Route 301.

The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the Tesla, police said.

Following the collision with the Tesla, police believe a third vehicle hit a passenger on the motorcycle and left the scene. Police don’t have a description of that vehicle and they’re searching for its driver.

The rear passenger in the Tesla, the motorcycle driver and a passenger on the motorcycle died at the scene, police said.

The motorcycle鈥檚 driver and passenger were identified as 48-year-old Matthew Eric Vowell and 47-year-old Krystal Ann Vowell, both from Friendship, Maryland.

The rear-seat passenger in the Tesla was identified as 22-year-old Adriana Lanae Maxwell of Glen Burnie.

The Tesla鈥檚 driver, who was not publicly identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators believe the Tesla was being used as a rideshare vehicle at the time of the crash.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation.

Just before 8:25 p.m., police were called to the 1600 block of Rosedale Street NE for the report of a shooting.

When they arrived, police found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said they are now looking for a “juvenile male wearing a black shirt and black pants.”

He was last seen on a black bike in the area of 16th Street and Rosedale, police said.

“Smithsonian Dreams,” a free public art experience created by artist Refik Anadol, will be presented July 17-18 from 9 to 11 p.m. each night, featuring lights, sound and large-scale visuals projected onto the Castle.

The installation uses a custom artificial intelligence system to reinterpret nearly two centuries of Smithsonian collections and research, drawing from millions of digitized items, including specimens, manuscripts, photographs, artworks and scientific records.

“For me, data is a form of memory,鈥� Anadol said. 鈥淭he Smithsonian preserves one of humanity鈥檚 most extraordinary repositories of knowledge, accumulated across generations of discovery and imagination. ‘Smithsonian Dreams’ asks what might emerge if that vast memory could become dynamic, if the Castle itself could learn from its collections, reflect upon them and dream through them.”

After Thursday night’s rainstorm, commuting Friday might have some struggles.

“Watch out for areas of patchy, dense fog for the morning commute following last night’s rain,” said 791欧美激情 First Alert Meteorologist Eileen Whelan. “Have the sunglasses, as well, with morning sunshine that could cause sun glare.”

Friday morning is expected to be sunny and warm, but the afternoon is expected to be increasingly cloudy.

“Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected during the afternoon hours,” Whelan said.

But those storms are not expected to be as widespread or severe as Thursday.

She said one or two storms could produce “damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours.”

On Saturday, she said to expect “muggy conditions” ahead of a cold front that could bring some more rain in the afternoon and evening but nothing severe is expected.

“Overall, plan for more clouds than sun with highs in the 80s for your Saturday plans,” she said.

Sunday is expected to be a little less humid with a mix of sun and clouds and “comfortable high temperatures in the 80s,” Whelan said.

Next week though, that brutal heat is expected to return.

“Very pleasant weather kicks-off the week, but a building heat wave will bring the returns of high temperatures in the 90s starting Tuesday,” Whelan said.

But there’s some good news.

“Fortunately, this next heat wave won’t be anywhere near as extreme as the last one,” she said.

For Tuesday evening, the National Weather Service predicted “numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms” followed by isolated thunderstorms after midnight.

“We do not have a flood watch for the metro area. However, we could be looking at a few showers and heavier downpours as we head through the late evening,” 791欧美激情 First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin said, especially west of D.C.

He also said it’s going to be a little cooler Wednesday.

“We’ll drop to the upper 60s to middle 70s by early tomorrow morning,” Rudin said, and rise into the lower 80s later Wednesday.

According to the CDC, in the heat you’ll want to drink 8 ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes, which is about a quart every hour.

And don’t chug it all at once. Smaller sips are better. And there is such a thing as too much water.

You should not drink more than 1 and a half quarts each hour as it could cause you to lose the amount of salt in your blood, which could prompt a medical emergency.

“There are safety precautions and things you need to be prepared for. Hydration, drink plenty of water, stay hydrated, bring a bottle of water with you. Activity management, bottle of water, aluminum, some metal, some glass,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich during a news conference on the dangerous heat wave and the importance of bringing fluids with you if you’re celebrating outside this weekend.

Reaching for that Fourth of July beer while in this record heat might not be the best idea.

Drinking alcohol within 24 hours of being active in the heat can increase your risk of heat-related illness, according to the CDC. So grab that bottle of water instead.

The same thing applies to energy drinks as well. Some energy drinks contain more caffeine than standard servings of coffee, tea or soft drinks and could impact your heart rate, which may already be elevated due to the heat.

“It’s almost like Martyrs’ Day was hiding in plain view,” said Gloria Browne-Marshall, a constitutional law professor at John Jay College, which is part of CUNY.

She said July 5 was chosen because it’s the anniversary of Frederick Douglass’ 1852 speech about what Independence Day meant to those enslaved.

“I think that our fifth of July tribute is asking the question, ‘Let’s look at the people who paid the price for the freedoms we have,'” she said.

Browne-Marshall said the semiquincentennial celebration of the U.S. seemed like the perfect time.

“I thought it would be important to also pay tribute to regular people whose lives were taken as protesters, activists, or their lives triggered protests, activism and social justice in this country,” she said.

Browne-Marshall is the author of “A Protest History of the United States.” She said she came up with the idea for Martyrs’ Day while talking to people on her book tour.

And she said the day is being recognized in different ways across the United States.

“All local communities have their own way of paying tribute to their local martyrs,” she said.

At Bus Boys and Poets in Hyattsville, Maryland, . Browne-Marshall said different areas across the country are celebrating it in different ways, including with church services and prayers.

“It’s not to compete with the Fourth of July at all, it’s just to reflect on the freedoms we just celebrated,” she said.
