DC under extreme heat alert Saturday as severe storms are expected to hit the region

The District is under an extreme heat alert Saturday as severe storms are expected to hit the region during the afternoon and evening hours.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued the alert as daytime temperatures are expected to feel like 105 degrees or hotter.

The alert is through Sunday at 8 a.m. and says, “extremely hot temperatures and humidity during the day and overnight will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. People who work or participate in outdoor activities may be at greater risk.”

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the region until 7 p.m.

Additionally, there was a code red alert for air quality as of Saturday morning.

D.C. issued a code orange air quality alert for the entire region, saying it was unhealthy for sensitive groups.

“Poor air quality continues as wildfire smoke lingers in the area,” AccuWeather Meteorologist La Troy Thornton.

The heat and smoke are not the only weather events to be aware of Saturday.

Severe storms are expected again Saturday afternoon and evening, “some of which may turn severe, bringing down pours, damage winds, perhaps even a tornado,” Thornton said.

The National Weather Service said the severe thunderstorms are expected mostly between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday with damaging wind gusts and large hail possible in addition to the chance of tornadoes.聽

The high will be 89 degrees Saturday during the day with the heavy storms expected to continue past midnight with a low of 77 degrees.

Sunday will be cloudy with “some hazy sun as the wildfire smoke lingers,” Thornton said.

On Monday, there will be possible thunderstorms in the afternoon with an otherwise sunny day.

Tuesday is expected to be cloudy with a thunderstorm possible in the afternoon.
