D.C.鈥檚 GALA Hispanic Theatre, which features productions in Spanish and English, was a victim of cybercrime, according to Rebecca Medrano, co-founder of the theatre.
The theatre鈥檚 accountant was sending a 鈥渟tandard wire transfer鈥� to a properties designer in New York when she saw it, Medrano said.
A screen message popped up saying the accountant had been locked out and someone else was in the system. Medrano said the accountant knew instantly that fraud had taken place and contacted the bank.
鈥淭he strange thing,鈥� Medrano said, was 鈥渢hat Citibank couldn鈥檛 stop it, and also, they never notified us.鈥�
She added that the theatre was told recovering the over $250,000 in funds could take anywhere from 90 days to eight months. “By then, GALA will be dead,” they wrote in
Citi declined to comment when contacted 91欧美激情 and, through a spokesperson, said the bank is investigating the situation.
鈥淲e filled out a police report, an FBI report,鈥� Medrano said.
The loss comes as the theatre is in rehearsal for a production, or 鈥淭he Palacios Sisters” in English, due to open next month.
Medrano said, despite the loss, 鈥淲e will open, the show must go on!鈥�
She explained that GALA has a message up on its website explaining the situation, and that as of midday Friday, 鈥淲e鈥檝e raised over $20,000 already.鈥�
The emergency fund is helping make the continuation of GALA鈥檚 work possible, Medrano said.
鈥淲e are on schedule and we want to thank the community for their love and support,鈥� she said.
Medrano says 鈥淟as Hermanas Palacios鈥� blends the story of Chekhov鈥檚 鈥淭hree Sisters鈥� with modern history, using the story of three sisters from Cuba arriving in the 鈥渢umultuous鈥� Miami of the 1980s.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a beautiful story,鈥� Medrano said.
