WASHINGTON – Wal-Mart now plans to open six stores in D.C., two more than originally planned.
Wal-Mart said in a news release the newest locations would be at the Skyland Town Center in Southeast and at Fort Totten Square in Northeast.
Both stores will sell groceries, including organic foods, and will have pharmacies.
The new locations means the District is planning to house six new Walmart locations:
- Ward 4: Georgia and Missouri Avenue NW
- Ward 4: Riggs Road NE and South Dakota Avenue NE
- Ward 5: New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road NE
- Ward 6: 801 New Jersey Avenue NW
- Ward 7: Capitol Heights (East Capitol Street and 58th)
- Ward 7: Good Hope Road and Alabama Avenue SE
The Skyland Town Center store will be part of a high-density, mixed-use redevelopment project.
About the Ward 7 project, Gary D. Rappaport, president and chief executive officer of The Rappaport Companies, says, “We will continue to work closely with the city to bring an economic boost that includes new housing and shopping choices to one of the more underserved areas of Washington D.C.”
The Fort Totten Square Walmart will be part of a mixed-use development that will include 350 apartments.
According to the release, the stores will create a combined total of 1,800 retail jobs and 600 construction jobs.
“Skyland and Fort Totten are two more communities where we think our stores can make a difference; as we move closer to opening our first stores here, we will remain focused on creating economic opportunity and helping to lower the price of groceries for D.C. residents,” says Henry Jordan, a senior vice president with Wal-Mart.
