CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) 鈥� Heartbroken New Zealanders lit candles and placed flowers at makeshift memorials set up in the city of Christchurch in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history.

Some mourners hugged their neighbors, while others stood in solemn silence at sites in the city center, not far from the two mosques where Muslims gathered for Friday prayers were mowed down by a racist gunman.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the shooter, an Australian native, had chosen to strike in New Zealand “because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion.”

US issues security alert in Mexican border city and suspends consular activities

MEXICO CITY (AP) 鈥� The U.S. government issued a travel alert for Americans planning to visit Mexicali in northern Mexico and temporarily suspended consular activities in the border city due to a 鈥減otential threat,鈥� without providing details. The notice, released Monday night, said that because of information about 鈥渁 threat,鈥� consular activities and travel to the capital of Baja California state, across the border from the U.S. city of Calexico, were suspended. The U.S. did not provide details about the threat or whom it was directed at and only urged its citizens to avoid government buildings, seek shelter in the event of an incident and remain aware of their surroundings. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that 鈥渢here was an alert about the possibility of a criminal group鈥� and added that the report was based on information from U.S. agencies.
